Sexual dysfunction refers to a difficulty experienced by an individual or a couple during any stage of a normal sexual activity, including desire, arousal, or orgasm.
Normally, sexual dysfunctions can be described in four categories:
Sexual desire disorders - decreased libido or lack of sexual desire
Sexual arousal disorders - include erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, male or female impotence
Orgasm disorders - persistent delays or absence of orgasm following a normal sexual excitement phase
Sexual pain disorders – effect primarily women and include dyspareunia (painful intercourse)and vaginismus (vaginal spasms)
While research suggests that sexual dysfunction is common (43% of women and 31% of men report some degree of difficulty), it is a topic that many people are hesitant to discuss. Fortunately, most cases of sexual dysfunction are treatable, and the sex therapists at CHS are skilled to deal with these sexual problems.
There are several types of sexual dysfunctions. They can be lifelong problems that have always been present, acquired problems that develop after a period of normal sexual function or situational problems that develop only under certain circumstances or with certain partners. Causes of sexual dysfunctions can be psychological, physical or related to interpersonal relationships or sociocultural influences.
Sexuality is a complex process. Individually, sexuality incorporates family, societal and religious beliefs, and is altered with aging, health status, and personal experience. In addition, sexual activity incorporates interpersonal relationships, each partner bringing unique attitudes, needs and responses into the coupling. A breakdown in any of these areas may lead to sexual dysfunction.
At CHS, we think about many of these problems as problems that are naturally occurring within the system of marriage/relationship. We don't consider that something is going wrong in the relationship, but as growth opportunities to help the individuals and couple move toward their sexual potential.
Lack of sexual desire is the most common sexual problem in women and premature ejaculation is the most prevalent sexual problem in men. The sex therapists at CHS work with all types of sexual dysfunctions, in men and women alike.
